Animal Welfare and Wildlife Conservation
We are proud to say that both Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals are heavily involved in supporting local animal welfare groups. In fact, our Hospitals do almost all, if not all, of the veterinary work for local welfare groups such as Save our Strays, Jack Russel Rescue, 4 Paws Rescue, Animal Welfare League, etc. We currently provide a heavily subsidised desexing, vaccination and microchipping service for these, and a large number of other groups, and have animals traveling from all over Sydney for their requirements. The total number of animals treated at Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals in the last 2 years would be well over 1000! We provide this service because we believe in animal welfare and feel that we have a role to play in helping these organisations to re-home these animals and save them from an otherwise dreadful fate!
We also provide a FREE service to the local wildlife rescue group WIRES and have assisted all sorts of endemic species including owls, bats, turtles, parrots, cockatoos, possums, wallabies, and kangaroo joeys. We are grateful for the opportunity given to us to assist with these animals and to play our part in nursing them back to health.
We have also asked our local wholesaler to not send us bags of chocolates in our weekly orders but to instead donate the money spent on chocolates to wildlife conservation.
We regularly donate to a large range of charities including the NSW cancer council, The Heart Foundation, and The Wilderness Society to name a few.
Stray Cats and Dogs
We regularly temporarily house stray cats and dogs until they can be collected from us by Penrith/Blue Mountains City Councils. We treat all injured stray animals that are presented to our Hospitals as if they were owned by a member of staff (ie. we provide the best care available in our facility). We rarely euthanase an injured stray except for humane reasons, but instead treat them and try to re-home them. We have performed extremely complex fracture repairs on many strays (mainly hit by cars) in order to nurse them back to health so that they may be re-homed. All associated costs are absorbed by our Hospitals. We do this because we truly are animal lovers and believe that if an animal has a chance to live, then we should provide the animal with that chance, whether a stray, a native animal, or a beloved pet.
We also provide a cat adoption service whereby stray kittens and cats are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped and sold below cost in order to reduce the euthanasia rate at the local animal shelter.
Work Experience Students
Our Hospitals regularly provide opportunities for work experience students from all local schools and TAFES. Our work experience program is extremely popular and we are usually fully booked for weeks in advance.
Support for Local Small Business
We play our part in supporting as many local small business service providers as possible for all our requirements including bookkeeping, printing, accounting, website design, drugs and consumables, maintenance and gardening. We believe that a healthy local economy will contribute to a happy and healthy local community.
