Dentistry

Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals offer the highest level of dental care available in general practice. We have the very latest dental equipment including the ability to take hi resolution digital x-rays of your pets teeth to assess their health all the way into the jaw. Our team of vets and nurses have been trained in the latest techniques to assess and treat your pets dental problems.

Did you know that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats over the age of 3 years have dental disease that "needs" veterinary treatment. Why? because our pets don't brush their teeth. People often do not realise that their pet has a serious dental problem. Lets face it, how often do you closely examine the teeth right up the back of your pet’s mouth. Most people accept their pets bad breath as normal. It isn't! That is the smell of your pets mouth rotting. Bacteria live in the gaps between the gums and the teeth and gradually eat away at the bone holding your pet’s teeth in. Anyone who has had a toothache knows how much it hurts. Why do we let our pets suffer? The answer to this is simple. People expect that their pet will stop eating if their dental disease becomes painful. This is not the case. Pets think that if they stop eating they will starve to death! They don't realise that you will take to the vet to have their painful toothache fixed. Don't rely on eating as a sign that everything is ok. At Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals every time your pet comes in to see us they will receive a thorough dental examination. If you just want your pet’s teeth checked and nothing else we will do that for no charge. This is because the lack of adequate dental care in our pet population is a serious welfare issue. Many animals suffer from severe pain for many years. We are committed to reducing this suffering. When your pet comes into our hospitals for a dental they will receive the highest level of care available in general practice.

 1.   They will receive a thorough physical examination to try and ensure they are in good shape;

2.   They will then have a pre-anaesthetic blood screen performed to ensure that their liver and kidneys are healthy;

3.   Then they will have an intravenous catheter placed and fluid therapy will be started. This allows your pet to maintain their blood pressure during the anaesthetic and also helps them to clear the anaesthetic drugs from their system after the procedure has finished.

4.   They will receive a high quality general anaesthetic using only the most modern procedures and medications. We have state of the art monitoring equipment to ensure that our patients are as safe as possible during the anaesthetic.

5.   We then perform a series of digital dental x-rays which allows us to carefully assess the health of each tooth and ensure that any teeth with damaged or infected roots are treated. The digital dental x-ray machine allows us to see the images within seconds of taking the x-ray and therefore we are able to make these decisions in real time without prolonging your pet’s anaesthetic.

6.   All of your pets teeth are then scaled with an ultrasonic scaler. We use one of the best scalers available and are able to clean the calculus and tartar from the gingival pockets without damaging the teeth or gums.

7.   Any infected or painful teeth are then removed using the least traumatic techniques possible. Your pet will not feel a thing as they are completely anaesthetized throughout the procedure.

8.   All remaining teeth a polished to an extremely smooth surface. This helps prevent bacteria from re-establishing on the teeth.

9.   Your pet will receive intravenous antibiotics before and during the procedure to kill any bacteria that enter the blood stream during the dental. We also give a long acting antibiotic called “convenia” which allows your pet to have a two-week course of antibiotics after the dental. This is a new medication that avoids you needing to handle your pet’s mouth after the dental to administer antibiotics.

10.  Pain relief is given before during and after the procedure. If required your pet will go home with some pain relief as well. Most pets are so relieved that the painful infection has been removed from their mouth that they fell better immediately.

11. Follow-up care is comprehensive. We provide rechecks at 7 days, 14 days, 3 months and 6 months at no additional charge. We will demonstrate how to slow the recurrence of dental disease in your pet.
