Regenerative Stem Cell Treatment

Regenerative Stem Cell Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

What is “Regenerative Stem Cell Treatment”?

Stem cells exist in every person and animal. They are cells that haven’t decided what they want to become yet. That means they have the potential to turn into any cell type in the body. Many of todays diseases, such as osteo-arthritis (arthritis) are caused by cell damage which the body can’t repair. Over time the lost cartilage cells lead to problems like joint pain. In the past veterinarians and doctors alike have only had available very limited options in treating these problems. There has been no way to actually replace the lost cells. Pain relief and weight loss have been the mainstay of arthritis treatment. Many people also turn to nutritional supplements like glucosamine to try and keep the remaining cartilage cells as healthy as possible. With stem cell technology we can now replace the missing cartilage cells with brand new cells.

Where do we get these Stem Cells from?

The stem cells are collected from existing reserves in our fat tissue. These are called adipose stem cells. The adipose stem cells are a great source of stem cells as most people and animals have excess stores of this tissue. The process involves a short surgery to remove 20 grams of fat.

The fat is then processed with the Medivet stem cell extraction and activation unit. This process takes between 2 and 4 hours. The stem cells are removed from the fat and given platelet rich plasma to enhance them. They are then activated with a patented wavelength of light. This process results in yields five times higher than any other stem cell treatment available at this time.

What do we do with the Stem Cells?

The stem cells are then transplanted into the area required. At this time stem cell treatments are generally for arthritis so the stem cells are injected into the affected joint. At Nepean Animal Hospital the cells are collected, processed and implanted all within 2-4 hours. This results in the best possible outcome for your pet. We are able to do this onsite as we have all the necessary skills and equipment to process the stem cells at the hospital.

What happens to the implanted Stem Cells?

It takes about 1 month for the implanted stem cells to turn into the new cells. In the case of arthritis it is cartilage cells that they turn into. This results in a new lining for your pets joint. There is currently no other way that cartilage can be repaired in the body.

Are there any “side-effects” from the treatment?

Because the stem cells come from the body of the actual patient they will not be rejected. Some patients experience a mild, temporary inflammatory response in the treated joints. This subsides quickly and improvements begin not long after. As with any procedure which involves a General Anaesthetic and Surgery there are small risks of complications. Because of the advanced techniques and equipment used at Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals the risks are no higher than those of a minor surgical procedure such as a male desexing operation. Please ensure you discuss this with the nurses or veterinarians at the Hospital during your pets initial assessment.

What should I expect from my pet?

For the first few days after treatment your pet may be more painful. As it takes approximately a month for the stem cells to become cartilage cells, you may not see the full benefits for this length of time. The improvements in movement and pain relief last several years.

What does it cost?

In the recent past stem cell treatments have cost in excess of $8000, and the yield of stem cells has been much lower. With the new technology available at Nepean Animal Hospital we can achieve far better results at a lower cost. The current cost of a Regenerative Stem Cell Treatment at Nepean Animal Hospital including the General Anaesthetic, Surgery, Processing of the Stem Cells in Preparation for Implantation and final Implantation is $2400. This makes the most advanced treatment available for arthritis accessible for many more people and their pets.
