We hope that your pet never has reason to use our veterinary facilities beyond routine check ups and preventative care. However, be assured that if things go wrong, we will be there to help. Please do not hesitate to contact us at any time for assistance.
Medical and surgical consultations are available for a range of problems, including dermatitis, arthritis, lameness, ear infections, vomiting, losing weight, growths, and everything else. All patient records are computerised using specialist veterinary software.
We also offer FREE day boarding if you are racing to work and can't wait for an appointment - simply drop off your pet with available contact numbers and we will examine them during the day and contact you with our assessment - that's at no extra cost!
We have the best dental facilities available, including an ultrasonic scaler and high speed drill and polisher. We recommend a dental to any pet with bad breath, sore or infected teeth or a build up of plaque. Many of our pets suffer in silence while their mouths rot.
All our desexing is performed under modern general anaesthetics with up to date monitoring equipment and surgical techniques. Unlike many other Hospitals, we send all our patients home with pain relief following a desexing operation. All pets are also encouraged to return to us for a FREE recheck any time in the first 10 days post surgery.
We offer desexing to dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs.
Emergency Treatment
Both of our Hospitals are well equipped and our staff are trained to provide emergency treatment to your pet for ticks, snake bites, motor vehicle accidents, dog attacks, poison ingestion (rat and snail bates), chocolate ingestion, etc. We are proud to say that (touch wood!!!) to date, we have not lost a dog or cat to snake bite. We treat quickly and aggressively and have, so far, sent all victims home safe and well.
House Calls/Ambulance Service
We have an ambulance service available 7 days per week to pick up and drop off your pet. If you require this service, please phone either Hospital to arrange a time that is suitable for you.
We are also available for home consultations 7 days per week. If you require this service, please phone either Hospital to arrange a time that is suitable to you. However, often we do recommend that you bring your pet to the Hospital if possible as it allows us to provide a greater range of tests and medications.
Microchipping
A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and is located under the skin between the shoulder blades. It does not cause any irritation or discomfort. Each microchip has its own special 15 digit number, and no two microchips have the same number. All veterinary surgeons and council pounds have microchip readers, so if your dog or cat is ever lost and is taken to a veterinary clinic or the pound, you will be able to be contacted. Your details, your animal's details and microchip number should have been sent to the Companion Animal Register (CAR). Before your puppy or kitten is six months old, you will need to register him/her with Council. It is a lifetime registration, so you only need to pay the registration fee once, and it is quite a bit less expensive to register your puppy if s/he is desexed.
It is important that you keep your details up to date on the CAR, and also on our hospital files. It is distressing to have a lost dog or cat with a microchip handed into us, only to discover that the owners have moved address and cannot be contacted.
Prescription Diets
Prescription diets (Hills, Eukanuba, Royal Canin) are available to aid in the treatment of a variety of ailments, ranging from arthritis to diabetes and renal failure.
FREE Puppy and Kitten Checks
We offer FREE checks to new pets to ensure their well being and provide advice on ongoing care. This includes worming, nutrition and desexing advice.
Radiology
Have you ever taken a blurry picture with your camera? That is why Nepean & Mountains Animal Hospitals have both recently installed brand new, high frequency x-ray machines in our dedicated imaging rooms. This means that we can take high quality diagnostic radiographs of our patients whether they are big or small. We also have an automatic processor that ensures that our radiographs can be developed within minutes, ready for our vets to assess.
Our Veterinarians are also able to do some types of contrast study in order to investigate various gastrointestinal and urinary tract disorders. For the safety of your pet and our staff, sedation or general anaesthesia may be required to facilitate taking radiographs. Unfortunately, occupational health and safety regulations mean that we are unable to allow owners to stay with their pets while radiography is in progress, however you are welcome to call for updates on your pet's progress. Otherwise, the treating Veterinarian will call once they have reviewed the radiographs. If required, an appointment can be made for you to discuss the findings with your Veterinarian.
At Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals, we are fortunate to employ the services of one of Australia's best radiologists, Dr. Robert Nichol, Veterinary Radiology and Ultrasound Specialist. Dr. Nichol is able to perform ultrasounds at each visit and also review all the x-rays taken during the previous fortnight. This not only allows continuing education for our Vets but also means that our patients benefit from a specialist opinion on their x-rays.
Senior Pet Care
As our pets age they develop a range of issues which require special attention. Arthritis and dental disease are the two most common problems we see in older pets. Both these conditions can be managed well through a combination of diet, medications and, in the case of dental disease, a good clean and polish. As our pets are living longer we are also seeing many more cases of cancer. Fortunately, if diagnosed early, most cancers can be removed before they have spread.
We periodically run Senior Pet Care information evenings for our clients. Food and drinks are provided and our Vets and guest speakers cover topics such as arthritis, obesity, and dental care. If you are interested in joining our Seniors Club, please contact us. Joining the club is FREE and means you can attend our information evenings presented by our vets on important topics regarding your pet's health. These events are a great way to get to know your vets in a more relaxed informal setting!
Specialist Referral
Occasionally we see patients which require very specialised care such as a CT scan or MRI. In those cases we refer our patients to the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde.
We also regularly consult with a number of specialist veterinarians who are of world class standard in their chosen fields. These specialists are often consulted about the management of difficult cases to ensure that everything possible is being done for your pet whilst being cared for in our Hospitals. Where appropriate, you will be referred to the specialist for a second opinion.
Surgery
With our dedicated surgeries and broad range of equipment, Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals are able to offer a very diverse range of surgical options. Both Hospitals have the latest medications and treatment equipment. This includes new infusion pumps, modern anaesthesia equipment, drugs and techniques, heart and respiration rate monitors, blood oxygen level monitors, 24 hour online access to specialist veterinarians around the world, orthopaedic and soft tissue surgical equipment as well as the necessary skills to carry out complex fracture repair. We recently invested in a Valley Lab diathermy unit to allow us to perform difficult surgery more efficiently and safely. From the plating of broken bones to the removal of large internal tumours, we have the capability to help your pet have the best possible outcome. All our patients receive pain relief during and after any surgical or invasive procedure. We also have the ability to provide around the clock pain relief if required.

This is a fracture repair recently performed at Nepean Animal Hospital by Dr Tony Karolis.
Ultrasound
Using an ultrasound effectively is a very specialised skill. At Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals, we employ the services of Dr. Robert Nichol, a specialist Radiologist who is capable of detecting minute changes in the shape and size of internal organs using his ultrasound. We find that having a specialist perform our ultrasounds maximises the likelihood of a correct diagnosis early in the course of an illness.
Vaccinations
We use C7 vaccinations as our standard canine vaccination. This vaccine provides the broadest protection available to your dog with minimal side effects. Reactions to vaccines are seen more commonly when older styles of vaccines are used, such as the injectable version of the kennel cough vaccine. We use the more effective intranasal vaccine for kennel cough and find that we have eliminated the reaction seen in the injectable version.
For our feline friends we routinely recommend an F5 as well as an FIV (feline aids) vaccination to provide maximum protection from disease. We find that felines that follow our recommended vaccination protocol can avoid most transmissible diseases.
All vaccinations include a full health examination for your pet. During this examination, the vet will thoroughly examine your pet's teeth, skin, body condition, and look for any lumps, bumps, and scratches, remembering that early diagnosis is often the key to prevention and cure!
Weight Loss
Weight loss is a critical issue facing many of our pets. We are experts at helping your pet to reduce weight safely and effectively. If you are worried about your pet's waste line, then please feel free to come in and see us.
In House Laboratory
At Nepean and Mountains Animal Hospitals we understand that reaching a diagnosis as quickly as possible has a big impact on the outcome for your pet. That's why we have invested in state of the art in-house laboratory facilities. Lasercyte blood counting equipment, biochemistry and blood gas testing are all available on site, which allows us to run a range of haematological and biochemical tests and have the results available for our veterinarians within minutes. These tests provide valuable information and enables our Veterinarians to rapidly identify any abnormalities and diagnose your pet’s condition. However, for some more specialised tests, such as drug monitoring, endocrine function testing and histopathology, we also send samples to a external veterinary pathology laboratory.
